EasyCar - the future of car rentals?

Motorists in the UK will be able to rent out their cars when they are not using them, under a scheme from the stables of easyJet's founder.

Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, ex-boss of the no-frills airline, and Brent Hoberman, who set up lastminute.com, yesterday unveiled the joint venture, called easyCar that will hit the road early next year.

A test run with 1000 cars in London will launch in the spring, allowing people to book the vehicles on their smartphones.

It “could prove to be the future of car rental and ownership in cities of the future”, according to Sir Stelios.

The scheme will allow car owners to set the price of the vehicle, and when it is available, and easyCar will then insure the vehicle while it is hired out.
