Toyota GT 86 makes a compelling case for itself

Certainly for the moment, this is the biggest competition the Subaru BRZ has: its twin, the Toyota GT 86. The volcanic orange coupe was unveiled in another corner of the Tokyo Motor Show, and frankly, it's got a lot to recommend it. The frontal treatment is slightly different than on the BRZ, but the only digression out back is the lack of a spoiler, and the GT 86 looks pretty good without it.

Inside, it's a tale of two cabins. Clearly Toyota has brought a higher-spec cockpit to the party, and although you might not dig the red two-tone scheme, the iPhone cradle, toggle switches and white gauges are nifty. Of course, that niftyness will cost you a navigation screen, but these are exactly the kinds of choices the GT 86 vs BRZ crowd will need to make. Brush up on the specs in the release after the jump and take a walk around it in our high-res image gallery.

MORE PASSION, MORE FUN: TOYOTA RECAPTURES THE JOY OF DRIVING
World debut for Toyota GT 86 sports car at the Tokyo motor show

KEY POINTS

- Entirely driver-focused sports car, designed to recapture the fundamental joys of motoring
- World's most compact four-seater sports car, delivering very low centre of gravity and excellent power-to-weight ratio
- A return to Toyota's sporting roots, with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive package
- Powertrain combines 197bhp 2.0-litre flat-four boxer engine with torque-enhancing D-4S injection technology
- Design achieves outstanding aerodynamics while recalling Toyota's sports car heritage
- New car to be called the GT 86 in Europe, in tribute to Toyota's GT car heritage
- On sale in the UK in June 2012

The anticipation is over: Toyota's new GT 86 sports car makes its world debut at the Tokyo motor show on November 30. The compact 2+2 model, one of the most keenly awaited new cars of the coming year, will go on sale in the UK in June 2012.

The GT 86 has been conceived as an entirely driver-focused machine, designed to deliver the core qualities of the classic sports car experience. That means precise, instant response to the smallest throttle and steering inputs and the kind of performance that appeals to those for whom driving is a passion, not a necessity.

The GT 86 is built on a new platform, with a highly aerodynamic bodyshell stretched tight over the car's mechanical elements. Rather than fitting a heavy, large capacity powertrain, Toyota has opted instead to go back to its sporting roots, installing a compact, front-mounted, free-revving petrol engine that drives the rear wheels.

This four-cylinder "boxer" unit generates 197bhp at 7,000rpm and maximum torque of 205Nm at 6,600rpm, giving the GT 86 brisk, engaging performance.

The powertrain is matched to the world's most compact four-seat design to create a car that benefits from light weight, low inertia and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power-to-weight ratio. For the driver that means lively, accessible performance and dynamic character with minimal intrusion from electronic systems.

Packaging

The GT 86 measures 4,240mm long, 1,285mm high and 2,570mm wide, dimensions which make it the most compact four-seater sports car available today.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to achieve the best balance: the car has a near-perfect 53:47 front-to-rear weight distribution. The flat-four engine format and the driver's hip point – the lowest of any current Toyota production model – together give the GT 86 an ultra-low centre of gravity, at just 475mm.

The GT 86 makes the most of a light kerb weight, making it easy for drivers to exploit its nimble handling and cornering poise. The suspension features MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear. The car rides on 17-inch wheels and is fitted with ventilated disc brakes fore and aft.

World's first horizontally opposed engine with D-4S

The GT 86's engine is the result of a joint Toyota and Subaru development programme that brings together their technical know-how and mutual passion for sports cars.

Toyota has added its D-4S injection technology to Subaru's new, horizontally opposed, naturally aspirated 1,998cc four-cylinder boxer engine. This system features separate twin injectors for both direct and port injection, and a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, increasing power and torque across a wide range of engine speeds without sacrificing fuel efficiency and environmental performance.

The flat-four engine has equal bore and stroke of 86.0mm and drives through either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick, precise shifts using a tactile, short-throw lever; the automatic transmission can be controlled using paddle shifts mounted on the steering wheel.

Power is distributed to the rear wheels via a limited slip differential to give the best possible grip in all driving conditions. The ABS and switchable vehicle stability control systems have been tuned specifically to deliver dynamic stability at the limit of the car's performance envelope with minimal electronic intervention to help preserve the purity of the driving experience.

Design

The design of the GT 86 successfully works within the technical constraints of achieving the most compact dimensions possible, a low centre of gravity and aerodynamic performance inspired by motorsport technology, while also displaying evocative, sweeping styling that recalls Toyota's sports car heritage.

Toyota's new design language informs the styling, as in the way attention is focused on the lower part of the car with the large lower grille. Elsewhere the "keen" approach can be witnessed in the clear, expressive lines.

The lower grille's "scorpion" look gives the GT 86 a more powerful appearance, with further sporting details including the model-specific 17-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler, twin exhausts and the "86" piston logo that denotes the car's special powertrain configuration.

On board, the ergonomics and function of every element the driver interacts with have been scrutinised to make driving the car as natural, instinctive and rewarding as possible. For example, the steering wheel has a 365mm diameter, making it the smallest ever fitted to a Toyota, and it is trimmed in buckskin, developed from exhaustive feedback from test drivers on how to achieve the best steering performance and grip.

The three-meter instrument cluster is arranged around a large tachometer, its design benefiting from close attention to the positioning of the displays, markings and typeface. The result is the best possible visibility and readability. The driver-focus of the cockpit is further reinforced by the carbon-effect trim, all-black roof lining, red stitching on the upholstery, aviation-style rocker switches and lightweight, aluminium pedals.

Toyota's 50-year sports car heritage

The GT 86 may be launched as the world's only current sports car to feature a front-mounted, horizontally opposed engine and rear-wheel drive, but it cannot claim to be the first. That honour is held by Toyota's two-cylinder boxer-engined Sports 800, which the company began developing in 1962. Since then, Toyota has established a long history of producing exciting, driver-focused sports cars with a front-engine, rear-wheel drive format that have proved as popular with the public as they have been successful in competition.

The beautiful 2000 GT, a coupe powered by a 2.0-litre straight-six engine, was first displayed at the 1965 Tokyo motor show and helped establish Toyota's global reputation as a sports car manufacturer.

Launched in 1971, the first Celica models featured rear-wheel drive powertrains and were praised by enthusiasts for their agility. All four Supra generations came with straight-six engines and rear-wheel drive, while from 1984 the MR2 won recognition as one of the best handling sports cars in motoring history.

The inspiration for the GT 86, however, is the Corolla GT (or Levin) AE86, a car with an enduring reputation for delivering sheer excitement and capturing the fundamental joy of driving. Its front-engine, rear-wheel drive package, compact dimensions, light weight, impeccable balance and superior power-to-weight ratio made it a must-have choice for rallying and circuit driving throughout its production life, from 1983 to 1987. Here in the UK the GT claimed two British Touring Car Championship titles and a series of top-level rally victories.

The GT 86 is a genuinely lightweight machine that offers the intimacy and involvement of a car that can be driven as though an extension of the driver's body. In this way, it perfectly recaptures the exhilarating spirit of the last of the AE86. And, with numerous customisable parts, its shares its predecessor's aim to be an affordable car that will evolve with its owner.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG

Yes, it's a tired trope. But if there's a pair of well-off empty-nesters, the husband drives a Mercedes-Benz SL and the wife has an SLK. Stereotypes become stereotypes for a reason: As often as not, they're true.

But to dismiss this latest SLK as yet another Executive Assistant-spec coupe/cabrio is to miss three important letters on the boot: A, M and G. Yet again, the crew from Affalt"2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG"erbach have butched up the smallest offering in the Benz lineup, taking the proverbial velvet hammer to the "Chick Car" cliche. The rear wheels of the 2012 SLK55 AMG are driven by V8 power and its brakes and suspension bits have been beefed up for the occasional back road bonanza or high-speed highway assault. And unlike the BMW Z4 that's simply begging for the M treatment, Mercedes actually has die Hoden to build a testosterone-infused droptop. And we can't thank them enough.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG side view2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG front view2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG rear view

Like past AMG-fettled SLKs, it takes a keen eye to spot the differences from the standard model. The SLK55 gets a reworked front fascia, rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips and AMG-specific 18-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in sport rubber. The seats benefit from some additional bolstering and carbon fiber trim lines the dash, doors and central tunnel. It's more refined than racy – typical of AMG's entry-level offerings – and if you still want to enjoy the overhead sights with the top up, you can add the trick Magic Sky Control roof panel available on the standard SLK.

For the first time in far too long, the badging on the back of this Mercedes actually correlates with engine displacement. In this case, the "55" refers to the 5.5-liter V8 – internally dubbed M152 – that differs from the twin-turbocharged M156 replacing the 6.2-liter V8 throughout the AMG line. Packed with variable valve timing and direct injection, this naturally aspirated engine churns out 412 horsepower at 6,800 rpm, while 398 pound-feet of torque effortlessly shoves you past its 4,500 peak. Coupled with the AMG Speedshift Plus seven-speed automatic, the 3,549-pound two-door hits 60 mph in 4.5 seconds before maxing out at its electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG engine

Even with all that luxury-laden weight, the SLK55 scoots around town and on the freeway with assuring authority, the seven-speed auto 'box running up and down the ratios with smoothness and precision whether leaving it in Drive or flipping the aluminum paddle shifters.

The counterpoint to that refined drivetrain is a positively raucous exhaust note that's sure to challenge owners to avoid putting the top up when the temperature demands a down jacket. With turbocharging becoming the favored power-boosting and fuel-conserving technology, a meticulously crafted set of pipes unencumbered by a set of snails is a rare treat. And with the heated Airscarf system in the seats and wind deflector behind the headrests, even a chilly Northern California morning did little to dampen the fun.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG interior2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG seats2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG paddle shifter2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG dash clock

Just as compelling – if not as thrilling – is the V8's ability to cut spark and fuel to cylinders two, three, five and eight, and then closing the valves to turn the 5.5-liter into a 2.75-liter four-cylinder. The deactivation is as seamless as we've experienced, only going into effect under light loads between 800 and 3,600 rpm, yet still delivering 170 lb-ft of torque. The only noticeable change is "ECO4" replacing "ECO8" on the display between the tach and speedo and a subtle alteration of the exhaust note, which instantly changes back to full-on burble in a scant 30 milliseconds. Interestingly, AMG's engineers say that cylinder deactivation shouldn't happen when the top is down, but we experienced the system engaging on several occasions – something we chalked up to the pre-production units on hand. Engine start-stop is also part of the package, and while Mercedes hasn't announced official fuel economy numbers, during our testing, we managed an average of around 25 mpg in mixed driving – commendable when you've got over 400 horses at your command.

During a run through the hills just outside Laguna Seca (if you're a local, you know the road), the SLK55's upgraded brakes handily reined in the coupe time and time again. If there were any fade, we didn't feel it, even as the modified traction control system lightly gripped the outside rear wheel's caliper to aid turn-in. Steering feel was surprisingly quick, nicely weighted and equally communicative – something recent AMGs have begun to excel at – although on-center feel was still Mercedes-grade light. But considering its intended purpose, the steering suits the SLK55 just fine. The reworked suspension (multilink front and rear with retuned springs) combined with the grippier rubber refused to be unsettled over sections of pockmarked pavement, and when traversing some of Monterey County's mountain passes, the SLK stuck right up to the edge of our public road comfort zone.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG rear 3/4 view2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG front fender2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG wheel detail2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG taillight

Although Mercedes booked Laguna for the afternoon, the SLK wasn't bound for the Corkscrew. Track time was intended for another AMG creation. And as it should be. The $70,000 (estimated) SLK55 isn't a sharp-edged track tool – it's a spirited grand tourer with a performance punch. It's for those who enjoy brisk Sunday drives and a soundtrack to match, all while blowing cliches out their quartet of exhaust pipes.

Volvo expands Polestar software upgrade to more models

Volvo is spreading the horsepower love around its fleet with a wider array of Polestar Performance software upgrades. 2011 and 2012 XC60, S60 and XC70 models equipped with a T6 engine are now available with a software upgrade that adds in 25 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque without impacting fuel economy. Those improvements put the engine's final figures at 325 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque, though the extra grunt won't come cheap. Volvo says that the software package will set buyers back a hefty $1,495 including destination when it goes on sale on December 5th. The company isn't saying why the T6 software costs $200 more than the 23-horsepower upgrade available on vehicles equipped with the automaker's T5 engine. That boost can be had on the C30, C70 and S40, and will eventually show up on the V50. Hit the jump for the brief press release.

PRESS RELEASE

Volvo Announces Newest Polestar Performance Packages Upgrade Now Available for 2011, 2012 XC60, S60 and XC70 T6 ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (Nov. 28, 2011) - Expanding on its recent announcement of performance packages for certain models with T5 engines, Volvo Cars of North America (VCNA) today announced factory-authorized performance tuning software for several additional Volvo models will be available next week at Volvo retailers across the country. The next wave of Polestar performance software packages will be available for 2011-2012 XC60, S60 and XC70 fitted with a T6 engine. The T6 performance software package carries an MSRP of $1,495 installed and goes on sale nationwide Dec. 5. The T6 Polestar software package adds 25 horsepower and 30 lb.-ft. of torque, bringing the three carlines to 325 horsepower and 355 lb.-ft. of torque. Equally impressive is that the added power does not affect fuel consumption, as the efficient tuning of the engine only increases the power output when it is needed. "Just a few weeks after announcing the performance package for select T5 models, we have already received tremendous feedback from our customers," said Chris Dauerer, VCNA's vice president of customer service. "With Polestar, we are able to deliver our performance-minded customers the enhanced driving package they have been looking for now across a variety of our carlines." Currently, the Polestar performance software package is also available for the following carlines: * XC60 T6 R-Design (MY2011-2012) * C30 T5 (MY2008-2012) * C70 T5 (MY2008-2012) * S40 T5 (MY2008-2011)

Siri hack lets iPhone control your car

We are so close to living in a world where everyone can be David Hasselhoff. Thanks to an enterprising programmer named Brandon Fiquett and Apple's Siri app for the iPhone 4S, there's at least one Acura TL out there responding to voice control in awesome Knight Rider fashion.

While not quite up to the level of interactivity that Hollywood dreamed up for the Knight Industries Two Thousand, Fiquett's TL will remotely start itself and turn off the ignition on his command. The system works by relaying the Siri command to a proxy server, which sends the instructions to a Viper car automation and security system. About the only thing missing here is William Daniels doing the voice of KITT – and thatawesome black Trans Am itself.

Fiquett has put his source code up for download, so if you're interested in trying it yourself and you've got some coding skills, have at it on his website. Otherwise, just click through the jump to watch the video.
