2012 Buick Regal.

Now that the Buick Regal is being manufactured in North America, it is time for General Motors to release a couple of new examples of its latest luxury sedan. For the 2012 model year, both the efficient Regal eAssist and performance Regal GS will add to the already impressive Buick lineup and will go on sale in a few months time. “Regal with eAssist and Regal GS offer distinct advantages to midsize luxury sport sedan customers,” said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing.
Pricing for both new models have been confirmed by Buick. Starting at $29,530, the Regal eAssist features an advanced six speed transmission, lithium-ion battery system and electric motor/generator that allows regenerative braking. When paired with the 2.4 liter, Ecotec four cylinder, the eAssist will achieve up to 36 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in the city.
On the other end of the spectrum is the Regal GS performance sedan. Rated at a SAE-Certified 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, the GS uses a direct-injected 2.0 liter turbocharged Ecotec four. First transmission choices will be limited to the six speed manual that will still net quality fuel economy of 27 mpg on the highway. Power will go to the front wheels for now and the GS makes for power than its competitors such as the Acura TSX V-6, Audi A4 Sport, Lexus IS 250 and Volvo S60 T5. Base MSRP will be $35,310.

Mystery Scoop: Is this the 2014 Cadillac ATS, a Future Buick or Something Else?

Maybe you can help us out here. A Carscoop reader, who prefers to remain anonymous, nabbed these photos of an identical pair of camouflaged prototype sedans at a tollbooth in Ohio.

The photos were shot from a distance with a cell phone camera, so it’s difficult to tell the brand and make of the vehicles. Our unnamed reader told us that the front end looked like a Cadillac but the rest of the car reminded him of a Buick, and we’ll agree with him.

If General Motors hadn’t imploded, the Buick Regal wouldn’t have been a Buick; it would have been a Saturn. The Regal is essentially a European-market Opel Insignia—a mid-size sedan that competes with the Ford Mondeo, Honda Accord, and Volkswagen Passat over there—rebadged and rebranded for the U.S. and China. It went on sale in the latter country last December.

In case people are worried about Buick’s offering what amounts to a gussied-up mid-size family sedan in the luxury field, that’s what Lincoln and Acura have done with the MKZ and TSX, respectively. We have to say the Buick is a classier piece than both of those. It’s handsome to look at and is hardly changed from the Insignia; only the grille, headlamps, taillight bulbs, badging, and side-mirror glass are different. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard, with 19s on the options list.

Although the Insignia plays in that mid-size family-car arena in Europe, it looks far more expensive inside than do the U.S.-market Chevy Malibu, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry. The Regal has more soft-touch plastic surfaces and more elegant finishes, such as satin-metal door pulls and piano-black trim. The Regal is reasonably commodious, too, with 97 cubic feet of passenger space allied to a 14-cubic-foot trunk. The rear seat doesn’t feel as accommodating as, say, an Accord’s, although the quoted legroom of 37.3 inches is a hair better than the Honda’s and nearly two inches better than an Audi A4’s.

Well Equipped at Launch

The Regal will be available only in CXL trim at launch, with standard leather seating surfaces, a power driver’s seat, a standard six-speed automatic transmission, heated front seats, and satellite radio. A backup camera, blind-spot monitoring, rear-seat side airbags, and a navigation system will be on the options list. The navigation system has three interfaces: a touch screen; a wheel-type controller by the driver’s right hand; and large buttons on the center console.

Mechanically, the Regal is almost identical to the Insignia. There will be two powertrains for the U.S.: a direct-injected, 2.4-liter four-cylinder making 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injection four that produces 220 hp and 258 lb-ft. Both engines come with standard six-speed automatic transmissions—the 2.0-liter’s is a GM design; the 2.4’s is sourced from Aisin—although the turbo will be offered with a six-speed manual some time after launch. A Buick with a manual tranny? It seems as incongruous as a talking lion, but since the prime competition (TSX) has a stick, why not? Buick executives have no idea of the take rate, by the way, citing a wait-and-see approach. The automaker estimates that the 2.4 will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in the mid-eight-second bracket, and we reckon the turbo will run to 60 in the low sevens, comparable with the TSX.

The Regal has a MacPherson-strut front and multilink rear suspension, with aluminum lower control arms all around. To accommodate all-season tires—versus the Euro-market Insignia’s summer rubber—the rear anti-roll bar is thinner by 0.04 inch and the shock settings were altered. The turbo will be offered with a three-mode “Interactive Drive Control System”—marketing-speak for adaptive shocks. There are driver-selectable “sport,” “normal,” and “tour” modes, although the system will adapt to an aggressive driving style in normal mode, automatically speeding up shift times, increasing steering effort, sharpening throttle response, and firming up the shocks. The IDCS system is bundled with the optional 19-inch wheels and tires and a variable-ratio steering rack. The turbo uses vented disc brakes all four corners, whereas the 2.4 gets solid rear rotors.

2011 Buick Enclave.

2011 Buick Enclave Features Rollover Prediction Technology. Despite the attention they garner, rollovers are among the rarest of vehicle crashes though they can be the most dangerous. According to the NHTSA, rollovers accounted for 2.2 percent of all vehicle crashes, though fatalities from these crashes amounted to 35.4 percent of all traffic deaths.
Not surprisingly, automakers have spent a lot of time and money on developing technology to help mitigate their occurrence. Take GM, for example. On its latest 2011 Buick Enclave crossover, engineers have installed advanced sensors designed to predict rollovers and help protect vehicle occupants before a crash occurs.
With such technology on board, the Enclave has garnered the NHTSA’s highest five-star overall vehicle safety score and was recently awarded a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The new sensors work in conjunction with the Enclave’s StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control, Panic Brake Assist and anti-lock brakes. The sensors also ensure timely deployment of occupant crash protection systems such as airbags.

They can predict in a fraction of a second whether a rollover is likely to occur. If it senses a rollover, the system sends a signal to deploy front seat safety belt pretensioners and head curtain side air bags to protect occupants. Pretensioners reduce safety belt slack, and load limiters moderate the load of the safety belt on the occupant in a crash.

Buick GL8, 2011

Buick GL8, 2011

The all-new 2011 Buick GL8 from Shanghai GM is now available. The luxury MPV builds on the heritage of the original Buick GL8, China's first family of executive wagons. Since the model's debut in 1999, more than 330,000 have been sold across China.

The new model, which will reach the market in January 2011, features seven innovations and 27 technological breakthroughs along with improvements in design, space and safety, technology, power, features and quality. The result is an unprecedented luxury MPV experience that is unmistakably Buick.

The new Buick GL8 has a graceful exterior design highlighted by Buick's distinctive double sweep spear running from front to back. Decorative metal bands add a sense of smooth, modern elegance. Its classic waterfall grille and chrome portholes further underscore the new GL8's Buick heritage.

With a length of 5,256 mm, a width of 1,878 mm, a height of 1,800 mm and a wheelbase of 3,088 mm, the new Buick GL8 provides a spacious ride for all occupants. The dignified interior merges Eastern and Western aesthetics. It features ice-blue atmosphere lighting and a 360-degree wraparound design inspired by luxury yachts.

Among the other amenities available are two-tone ergonomic genuine leather seats; a two-piece panorama sunroof; an electric anti-pinch sliding door and one-touch electric lift rear door; a 10-speaker, 5.1-channel Bose sound system; a 7-inch touch screen up front and 10.2-inch WVGA HD display in back; and the OnStar in-vehicle safety, security and communication service.

An enhanced suspension with independent front-and-back sub-frames ensures a smooth, steady ride. Buick's signature QuietTuning reduces, blocks and absorbs interior noise, for a distraction-free environment that is comparable to that of a luxury sedan.

The new Buick GL8 comes with a choice of a 3.0-liter V-6 SIDI intelligent direct injection engine or a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine with segment-leading fuel efficiency. GM's advanced 6-speed automatic transmission comes standard, providing unrivaled power in the luxury MPV segment.

In the area of safety, the new Buick GL8 has a super-solid body frame. The Bosch 8.1 ESP system delivers premium handling. It is complemented by large-size tires and disc brakes, with six air bags available on selected models. For maximum visibility, the new Buick GL8 incorporates multi-dimensional blue ray Bi-Xenon HID headlights and crystal-like chrome LED taillights.

The new Buick GL8 luxury MPV has a retail price of between RMB 288,000 and RMB 388,000. Shanghai GM is also introducing an upgraded 2011 model of the current Buick GL8 in December 2010, targeting the upper-medium MPV segment. It includes a new 2.4-liter Ecotec engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. This "dual-vehicle strategy" will enable Shanghai GM to more fully address the MPV market, from the upper-medium to luxury segments.
